Net neutrality has been a topic up for discussion a lot lately, but in its essence net neutrality is the idea that internet service providers treat all internet data equally and don’t discriminate based on who is using the data. In California right now, one of the strictest net neutrality laws was just passed. Under this law, Internet providers would be unable to block certain sites or charge companies for giving people faster access. This law was pushed by California state senators, who hope this bill will move the rest of the nation to create stronger net neutrality rules.

However, the Department of Justice is currently filing a lawsuit against the state of California over this law. They think this bill goes against the federal internet laws, and internet providers agree and argue that it may raise prices for consumers. California citizens and government officials have a lot of work to do to get this law though a court trial, but if they succeed then this will be the first time any US area will go back to net neutrality levels from when Obama was president. Although net neutrality is a highly controversial topic, in my opinion these laws passed by California are a step in the right direction to a more equitable internet.
