Cyber security is an even larger issue than people realize. I was unaware that a secure country has a regular army as well as a cyber army. Computers could be used to shut off water supplies and transportation grids in an upcoming war. After watching a video called how not to get hacked and hearing from a chrome security manager and information security engineer, I learned about different forms of hacking.

A virus is a program that gets installed usually unintentionally, harming the user and their computer. A virus is able to spread to other computers and can be downloaded as a fake helpful application. Viruses, once one a computer, can delete or duplicate files or even control a computer without the user on it. When viruses control millions of computers, hackers can use them as a bot net to attack and take down websites. This is called a distributed denial of service, which caused websites to overload and stop working. Another way of hacking is a phishing scam. This can be what seems like a trustworthy email to give a password for an account.

I also learned that 90% of the time a computer gets hacked it is because of a user mistake. There are many things we can do to not get hacked. One thing we can do is to look for the lock symbol when browsing a website. If there is no lock and your website says http without an s, then there is a chance your data on this website is not secure. Another thing we can do is check the url to make sure we can trust it and it is a safe, known website and not a fake similar website.

To make sure we do not download viruses, we should make sure to only download from trustworthy sources and install security updates. In addition to this using strong passwords and multiple passwords ensures that one password given to a phishing scam will not allow entrance to all your accounts. There are many more things we can do, and even though hacking can seem scary, it is easily preventable.
